Global Literature

Guiding Questions

How can characters in global literature be used as models of hope for how we can support those that are powerless to become powerful?

Supporting questions

  • Who has power?

  • How can I feel powerful in my daily life?

  • How can I provide support to those who seem disempowered?

Project Based Learning in the World Language Classroom

To kick off this literature unit the Young Kings of RBHS watched the movie called the Good Lie in order to have a deeper understanding of what a refugee experience could be.

The Good Lie

This movie a based on a true story and is about the longest civil war in history which took place in Sudan. The movie is about a group of children who flee to safety from the war and their trauma along the way.

7elements

The the Young Kings heard from a speaker from 7elements, Mike Newsome. He spoke to the Young Kings about a group of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic.

This group of Haitians has been there for generations due to the sugar cane factories. When the factories closed the people were left there and there they remain. They are not citizens of the Dominican Republic and they don't want to go back to Haiti. Their living conditions were very dire.

Young Kings chose a topic or topics (based on the size of the class) then researched it concerning Haiti and then presented to the class. Each Young King was responsible for completing the KWL (SVA in French) chart.

This is an example of the work one Young King presented:

Time to Read!

This book is about the struggles of a Haitian family. It also discusses an account of the dangerous 14 hour boat ride from Haiti to the U.S. that some take.

I have found that incorporating more literature and discussions engages my students in a deeper, more meaningful way with World Language learning.

Other Books We Read This Year

It was important for me that the Young Kings saw themselves in the books that we read.

"Les Chausettes de Tito"

This book was about a Senegalese boy living in New York.

"Kobe Naissance d'une LÉgende"

This book was about the life of the acclaimed Kobe Bryant.

My Student Won World language High school student of the year!

Amaziah is an 11th grade student at Ronald Brown College Preparatory High School. Amaziah wanted to learn French because he heard that speaking French is fun and challenging. Also, French can be part of some English words. His favorite part about French class is adapting to learning and speaking French. His favorite French book is called "Un Voyage Difficile."
